I get many raised eyebrows when presenting my company’s name - Preemadonna. To some it sounds narcissistic: why else would I include my name as part of the company? Critics have suggested it's too “feminine” and that I’m making technology less serious by attributing it to a beauty ritual that is categorized as "girly".
From the day that Preemadonna was incorporated, I knew that we would be a global company built by girls. I wanted the company to incorporate a female, international perspective to power our products and community.
I spent two weeks on the East Coast in July for work meetings and for the #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us conference in New York City. This was my first time attending a professional blogger event and it exceeded my expectations.
I met many incredible women who forged their own entrepreneurial path through their blogs - even while having full time jobs. I immediately felt a strong sense of camaraderie as I networked and learned the ins and outs of vlogging (video blogging), crafting relevant content, and creating an authentic brand with 1,000+ other women.
As we’ve mentioned in the past, Preemadonna means being a lot of things - being dynamic, being smart, and feeling beautiful. That’s the foundation that we are building the company on, but many of you have asked how it relates to our first product, the Nailbot. Well, it’s complicated.
Note: If you missed Part 1 of our HAX story, check out my previous blog post!
HAX Demo day was the culmination of the hardware accelerator, and Preemadonna’s adventures in China. On May 11, 2015, we participated in HAX Demo Day in San Francisco where we showcased all of our efforts over the past several months (and years!) to create the best Nailbot, a nail art and nail painting robot, possible.
HAX is the #1 hardware accelerator program, and Preemadonna’s guardian angel
When I first got the news that we got into Hax, Batch 6, I was ecstatic and inspired. HAX (formerly Haxlr8r) is the world’s first hardware accelerator - they take 10-15 global based teams to Shenzhen, China for four months where they give the lucky few some initial capital, and significant mentorship & engineering resources to bring the teams’ hardware concepts to advanced prototype form.
Maker Faire is called the "Greatest Show and Tell on Earth" and I can’t think of a better way to describe the experience. This year as a Preemadonna co-founder, alongside my partner, Pree, I participated as a booth attendant for Maker Faire Bay Area 2015 instead of just a regular participant. It gives a different perspective.
I am a student of history. I learn through real world tales of extraordinary triumphs and heartbreaks.
At 29 in 2012, I was on an uncharted path. I had nothing (so I perceived) ‘tying’ me down – no children, boyfriend, employer, or huge responsibility. Instead, I had a crazy idea. I wanted to build a nail painting robot.
This robot, “The Nailbot”, would eventually define the next two and half years of my life (and counting).
